There are two simple criteria to help you decide whether a facelift is appropriate for you.

Criterion: The aging changes that bother you can only be satisfactorily addressed by a facelift. It’s important to understand that while a facelift is a highly effective method of facial rejuvenation, it is also an invasive surgery. It is only appropriate if the signs of aging cannot be adequately corrected with less invasive methods. At some point, minimally invasive treatments like fillers reach their limits. More of them can make the face look unnatural. That’s when it’s time to consider a facelift.

Criterion: The aging changes must personally bother you significantly. A facelift is a lengthy surgery with a recovery period and social downtime. It is only appropriate if you deeply desire the correction of these aging changes.

There is no ideal age for a facelift. Age-related tissue sagging occurs at different rates for everyone. Genetic factors, significant weight fluctuations, and other environmental factors play a role. Noticeable facial sagging can begin as early as age 35, though a surgical facelift is rarely appropriate at this age. In some cases, a facelift only becomes necessary after age 70. Most of our patients are between 50 and 70 years old.

Most patients require pain medication for the first 3 to 7 days after surgery. Most describe the pain as a feeling of strong tension.

Depending on the extent of the lift, the social downtime is typically 3–4 weeks. After that, you can appear in public with makeup.

The usual answer is 8 to 10 years. However, aging occurs in spurts, and facial tissue may sag earlier in some people and later in others. Even if sagging reoccurs after 10 years, you will still look better than if you had never had a facelift. This means the surgery provides lifelong benefits.

Yes, but this is usually a compromise procedure. The jawline and excess tissue under the chin are much better corrected in combination with a facelift. Therefore, we usually perform a neck lift and facelift together.

The scars from a facelift are placed to be barely visible. Typically, they run along the hairline at the temples, in front of the ear, around the earlobe, and end behind the ear in the hairline. This allows them to be well-hidden, even with updos or short hairstyles. If a neck lift is performed in combination, there will also be a small scar under the chin. With the right surgical technique and proper aftercare, the scars usually heal discreetly.

The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and the anesthesia time can last several hours. Thanks to modern anesthesia techniques, a longer anesthesia duration is very safe today. Before the surgery, our anesthesiologists conduct a thorough examination to assess any individual risks. For healthy patients without serious pre-existing conditions, the risk of complications from anesthesia is very low.
